Finding the Perfect Fit: What’s the Best Country for You?

What country is your perfect fit? InterNations conducts an annual poll to provide an overview of which countries make the best fit for expats, based on a variety of factors: leisure options, personal happiness, travel and transportation, safety and security, and health and well being. The most recent survey added digital life to reflect the ever increasing need to stay connected no matter where you are located.  The results can be surprising and can help those in transition consider what country might be the best fit for their personal inclinations.

Ecuador, for example, is an interesting case in point.  Rated at #25 out of 75 in 2017, last year’s poll pushed Ecuador to third place among best places for expats. However, professional satisfaction was not the primary aspect of Ecuador’s popularity: one-fifth (20%) — double the global average of 10% — reported that quality of life was the primary motivation for relocation.  Estonia ranked #21 in overall quality of life, but ranked #1 in the new category of digital life. Germany, on the other hand, dropped 16 places in the quality of life index, largely because of low performance in the digital life category. Current events also play a large role in how comfortable expats feel in different countries. Malta’s quality of life index dropped 19 places, largely based on an increasingly tense political situation that might leave expats feeling insecure or unsafe.
